Three area teams were ranked in the Associated Press preseason poll, including Bloomington South at No. 3 in Class 5A.

The Panthers are coming off three straight 11-win seasons and have won sectional championships in each of those campaigns. Three junior all-state players return on offense: quarterback Gavin Yeskie, receiver Chris Bomba and running back Kristian Pechac.

Bloomington North was not ranked in the top 10 but was also receiving votes in Class 5A.

Linton, state title winners in Class 1A last year, debuted at No. 5 in Class 2A in the AP poll. The Miners finished last season 15-0 but move up to Class 2A this year because of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s postseason success factor.

Eastern Greene also cracked the top 10. The Thunderbirds came in at No. 10 in Class 1A; they are the reigning sectional champions after beating West Washington in the sectional final last season. West Washington came in at No. 9 in the AP’s first poll of the season.

Linton’s Kip Fougerousse has verbally committed to play his college baseball at Indiana.

Fougerousse batted .438 with a .573 on-base percentage as a freshman for the Miners in 2017. He also had five doubles, three home runs and 23 RBIs.

Fougerousse can play multiple positions, playing third base and the outfield last season. He also threw 41 innings as a pitcher with a 2.56 earned run average and 41 strikeouts.

Fougerousse is a multi-sport athlete, as well. He played for the Linton basketball team as a freshman.

Bloomington North pitcher Riley Crean was named to the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Class 4A All-State team.

Crean was one of seven pitchers honored, with one player selected at each of the other field positions. Arm issues kept him in the outfield, for the most part, but he hit .325 with 10 doubles and 19 RBIs. On the mound, threw 122/3 innings with a 2.21 ERA. He was drafted in the 35th round by the Chicago White Sox, but will spend next season at the IMG Academy in Florida.

Edgewood’s Connor Morton and Phillip Terrell each received honorable mention in Class 3A.

In 2A, honorable mention went to Linton’s Logan Hollingsworth.
